Living in a state of constant stress, whether conscious or unconscious, can be illustrated through the metaphor of coins. Early traumatic experiences become stored in the body, affecting muscles and organs, and especially the fascia ~ the connective tissue throughout our body.
In Transforming Touch therapy, the emphasis is on the client and their regulation system, rather than solely addressing specific issues. This therapeutic approach fosters deep relaxation and a sense of safety, allowing clients to feel more regulated in a way that opens up new possibilities. Those who once felt “stuck” can find themselves moving forward, making choices, and leading more fulfilling lives.
During childhood, our developing bodies often concealed intense emotions and feelings that were overwhelming or unsupported in our environment. This was a crucial survival mechanism ~ a protective strategy designed to help us feel secure.
As a result, these emotions became trapped and hidden within us. Over time, this adaptation shapes our nervous system, leading to a persistent belief that something is fundamentally wrong with us. This creates a subtle but painful sense that we need to be “fixed.”
Imagine that your body is allocated 100 coins to spend each day. If your body remains in a state of high alert, it mistakenly interprets ordinary situations as threats. It thereby producing stress hormones to keep you alert so you can remain safe.
Your body is expending energy to tighten, protect, and numb itself against the barrage of real or perceived threats. This is draining and results in many of those precious coins being spent merely on maintaining a sense of security.
Relying on willpower and mental effort to alter these patterns can be exhausting and often ineffective. Clients who perceive themselves as lazy or unproductive may realize that instead, their energy has been diverted towards protection and safety.
In a Transforming Touch Therapy session, clients are invited to lie on a therapy table or sit comfortably in a chair. The provider uses a seven-point protocol focusing on key areas such as the kidneys, adrenal glands, and brain stem ~ vital gateways to the nervous system.
By providing a grounding presence, the therapist allows the client’s nervous system to gradually relax and open at its own pace. This increased capacity within the nervous system creates an opportunity for healing in all domains of life.
Healing unfolds in the context of the therapeutic relationship and somatic trust, making space for the client’s story to be acknowledged and embraced. Over time, more of our coins are freed up from the goal of safety, and are available for the more fulfilling aspects of our lives.
